Frequently Asked Questions
On this page we
collected the most frequently asked questions we encounter in our
practice. If you have a general
question about Dyslexia testing for which we don't have the answer
here, please contact us and we will discuss
it with you.

-
There are many
other organisations that offer Dyslexia testing. Are you any
different? - According to
our clients and other professionals, yes, we are. Our
assessments are extremely detailed and comprehensive and parents
find the assessment results very beneficial.
We also have an extensive
test library and we can use tests that are
most suitable for a child's age and developmental level. Similarly,
our diagnostic reports are highly regarded by other professionals and
we often receive positive feedback. Unfortunately we also often come across other
reports that are not up to our standards.
-
Do you provide
Dyslexia testing for adults? - Yes. We use different
tests for children and adults, but the process of testing is
essentially the same.
-
What are your fees? - We offer two types of assessments;
a diagnostic assessment of Dyslexia ($950) and a diagnostic assessment with cognitive assessment ($1250). Both assessments include
a report and recommendations.
-
Are the assessment fees covered by Medicare? - Unfortunately,
no. Also, whilst we disagree with government policies to
exclude assessments from the Better Access to Mental Health
initiative, it is against Medicare regulations to use GP referrals for psychological
services to claim the Medicare benefit. For families who
experience financial hardship we offer our own benefit and we are
happy to offer payment schedules or substantially reduced
fees.
-
Are the assessment fees covered by private health
insurance?
- Most
private health insurance providers offer cover for psychological
assessments. Please check with your provider what is covered.
-
What to tell my child before the assessment?
- It depends on the
child's age and maturity level. For younger children we would
suggest to tell them that a "puzzle teacher" will do some word
puzzle exercises. For older children we suggest telling them that
we are trying to find out strengths and weaknesses. You may add
that everyone has strengths and weaknesses and learning about them
is exciting and helpful. Don't
lie
or leave telling your child about the assessment to the last
minute.
-
How long
does a Dyslexia assessment take? -
It depends on individual children
and the type of testing we conduct. We ask parents to set aside at least 3 hours for the assessment. If additional cognitive assessment is required, the time involved can be as long as 4 hours.
-
Do you offer treatment?
- Yes. We offer treatment
within our practice or we
can make referrals to other professionals.
-
Do you offer recommendations after the
assessment?
- Yes. Our
recommendations depend on the test findings. In most
cases, a substantial section of the report that
you receive describes strategies for parents and
schools. |
