Dyslexia Testing - What Help is Available?

Dyslexia is a life long condition. Since Dyslexia is not a disease, there is no cure and Dyslexia cannot be "fixed". Despite being a chronic condition, the most important points to remember is that children with Dyslexia CAN learn to read, they CAN achieve high academic success and they CAN lead a successful life.

Helping Children with Dyslexia

Children with Dyslexia require practice, practice, and yes, more practice. Research shows that improving phonemic awareness produces the most promising results. Specialised assistance coupled with outside school hours tutoring is a great way to practice reading skills. However, keep in mind that this can become tedious for children and care should be taken to ensure that children do not develop an aversion to learning.

Most children with Dyslexia also experience a level of anxiety related to reading. This is not surprising. Since Dyslexia can occur in isolation, children can be highly aware of their difficulties and this awareness could lead to anxiety and loss of self-esteem. Hence, Dyslexia treatment often involves elements of anxiety reduction and self-esteem enhancement strategies.

Improving Reading Skills

There are several ways to improve reading skills, depending on the extent of children's problems. Below is a list of techniques that can be useful in improving reading skills:

  • Summarisation of text while reading and after reading

  • Questioning before reading text

  • Chunking

  • Looking for word families when decoding text

  • Learning about "story grammar"

  • Learning decoding rules

  • Segmenting words

  • Practicing and improving letter-sound awareness

  • Learning about word Syllables

  • Practicing attention enhancement games and exercises
